Most candidates treat IRO-002 as background noise — a "tools" standard sitting behind the operating standards that actually tell you what to do. That is exactly why the exam likes it. IRO-002 is where test writers check whether you can separate three things that look identical on a bad day in the control room: having reliability capabilities, using them, and getting the data that feeds them.

Get that separation straight and a whole cluster of IRO questions becomes easy. Blur it and you will lose points across IRO-002, IRO-008, IRO-010, and IRO-018 all at once.

Test Tips

  1. Learn the division of labor across the IRO family. IRO-002 is the capability standard — the Reliability Coordinator must have monitoring and analysis capabilities, and data exchange capabilities to support them. IRO-008 is the use standard — performing Operational Planning Analyses and Real-time Assessments. IRO-010 is the data standard — the RC specifies what data and information it needs, and registered entities provide it. IRO-018 covers quality and awareness of that Real-time monitoring and analysis data. Questions are often written so that all four are plausible; only the verb in the stem tells you which one applies.
  2. "Redundant" and "diversely routed" are two separate tests. This is the single most-missed concept on this standard. Two servers in the same rack, on the same circuit, behind the same fiber path are redundant but not diversely routed — one backhoe takes both. Diverse routing means the paths do not share a common failure point. If an answer choice only duplicates hardware, it is a distractor.
  3. Watch the functional entity in the stem. IRO standards obligate the Reliability Coordinator. The TOP and BA counterparts live in the TOP family — most notably TOP-010 as the Transmission Operator and Balancing Authority analogue to IRO-018, and TOP-001 for TOP/BA data exchange and operating obligations. If the stem says "a Transmission Operator," an IRO-only answer is wrong even if the concept is right.
  4. A tool outage is not automatically an emergency. Losing a State Estimator or Real-time Contingency Analysis degrades your assessment capability. It does not by itself justify declaring an Energy Emergency Alert or shedding load. The exam-correct response chain is: recognize the degradation, notify the entities that need to know (impacted TOPs, BAs, and neighboring RCs), continue performing Real-time Assessments by whatever means remain, and escalate only if actual system conditions warrant it.
  5. Memory aid — "Have it, Feed it, Watch it, Use it." Have it = IRO-002 (capability). Feed it = IRO-010 (data specification). Watch it = IRO-018 (data quality and alarm process monitoring). Use it = IRO-008 (analyses and assessments). Four verbs, four standards. Write it on your scratch sheet before question one.
  6. Do not confuse tool loss with facility loss. A total loss of control center functionality lands you in EOP-008 territory — backup functionality, transfer of responsibility, and the plan you are required to maintain and test. A degraded application inside a functioning control center does not. Read the stem for whether the center or the application went down.
