FERC's 60-Day Large-Load Clock Ran Out Monday — All Six RTOs Had to Answer
On June 18, 2026, FERC issued show cause orders under Section 206 of the Federal Power Act to every jurisdictional grid operator — PJM, MISO, SPP, ISO-NE, NYISO, and CAISO — and their transmission owners.
Each was given 60 days to do one of two things: prove its existing open access transmission tariff is still just and reasonable, or file tariff changes that address how large loads connect and take service. That clock ran out this Monday, August 17.
FERC's preliminary finding was blunt. Current tariffs may be unjust and unreasonable because they don't adequately handle data centers, co-located load, and the other large energy users now filling the queues.
What It Means for Operators, Planners, and Compliance Teams
Every FERC-jurisdictional region now has a live large-load reform track — whether the operator defended the status quo, filed Section 205 revisions, or took the up-to-90-day abeyance it had to request back on August 3.
The comment window is open. Interested parties get 30 days to respond to each filing, so transmission owners, generators, and large customers can get on the record now.
