One Week Left: NERC's Level 3 Computational Load Alert Reporting Closes August 3
The reporting window on NERC's Level 3 Alert for computational loads closes Monday, August 3, 2026, at midnight Eastern. That is one week from today.
NERC issued the Alert on May 4, 2026, under Rule 810 of its Rules of Procedure. It lays out seven Essential Actions covering modeling, studies, commissioning, protection, fault recording, and operator communications for data centers, AI training facilities, and crypto mining loads.
It applies to entities registered as Transmission Planner, Planning Coordinator, Transmission Owner, Balancing Authority, Reliability Coordinator, and Transmission Operator. Acknowledgment was due May 11. The full response — up to 33 questions depending on your registered functions — is due August 3 through the NERC Alert System.
Why the Last Week Is Where Responses Go Wrong
A valid response takes three separate steps in the Alert System: acknowledge the Alert, submit the response, and approve the response. Miss the approval step and the submission doesn't count — even if every answer is done.
If you hold multiple registrations, your answers span planning, operations, and protection. The workload questions — low, significant, or cumbersome effort — deserve a real internal check, not a guess. NERC aggregates U.S. responses into an anonymized report to FERC, and they feed the Project 2026-02 standards work. What industry reports now shapes what becomes mandatory later.
Worth flagging to your operations desk: Essential Action 7 asks TOPs, RCs, and BAs to establish Interpersonal Communication capabilities and joint operating procedures with computational load facilities.
