PJM Fires a Hot Weather Alert for Its Western Region as Summer Demand Ramps
PJM issued a Hot Weather Alert for its Western region for June 14–15, with temperatures forecast to reach and exceed 90 degrees and high humidity pushing demand up across the footprint.
A Hot Weather Alert is a routine readiness step, not an emergency. It tells transmission and generation owners to prepare crews and equipment, defer non-critical maintenance, and keep units available for the load that heat brings.
It is the latest in a run of June alerts. PJM has already posted alerts for June 5–6 and June 11–12 in the Mid-Atlantic and Southern regions, and is carrying roughly 179,200 MW of generation plus about 7,900 MW of contracted demand response into the season.
What It Means in the Control Room
The alert itself is ordinary. The backdrop is not. NERC's 2026 Summer Reliability Assessment put aggregate peak demand more than 11 GW above last summer's projection — outpacing the year-over-year jump that preceded Summer 2025 — and named large-load growth as both a forecasting and an operational wildcard.
That changes how an early-season alert reads. Reserve margins are thinner where data-center load has landed, and PJM's accredited reserve margin has slid from 35.7% toward 29.7%. Heat that used to be comfortably covered now leans harder on unit availability, accurate load forecasts, and demand response that actually shows up.
For operators, reliability coordinators, and compliance teams, the work is unglamorous: confirm deferred maintenance, validate DR commitments, watch the large-load forecast error, and treat each routine alert as a rehearsal for the day one of them escalates.
