NERC Flags MISO and PJM at Elevated Summer Risk Despite Record Resource Additions
NERC's 2026 Summer Reliability Assessment is out, and the headline is mixed. Record resource additions — a wave of solar, batteries, and some new gas-fired generation — have strengthened the overall outlook. But several regions still carry an elevated-risk designation heading into peak season.
Aggregate peak demand across all assessment areas climbed more than 11 GW above last summer's projections — outpacing even the 10 GW jump that preceded Summer 2025.
MISO sits at elevated risk of operating reserve shortfalls during high demand or low resource output. The math is sobering: more than 31,000 MW of installed wind contributes just 5,616 MW on-peak, and 18,245 MW of installed solar counts for 9,123 MW. PJM and WECC-Basin are flagged as well.
What This Means in the Control Room
Elevated risk isn't a forecast of failure — it's a signal to tighten up. It means reserve margins thin out fast when heat, low wind output, and lingering spring maintenance outages line up at the wrong time.
For operators and reliability coordinators, that means conservative operating postures, sharper awareness of capacity accreditation, and EEA readiness drilled before the first heat wave — not during it. Transmission planners should expect more frequent reserve-tight conditions to show up in next year's studies.
Large, unpredictable loads remain the wild card. Both forecasting and real-time operations get harder when load can swing without warning.
