FERC's Large Load Deadline Lands at Today's Open Meeting
FERC's self-imposed deadline to act on large load interconnection arrives today. The Commission holds its monthly Open Meeting at 10:00 a.m. EDT — the last scheduled meeting inside the window it set to rule on Docket No. RM26-4-000.
On April 16, FERC publicly committed to act "by June 2026" on the Advance Notice of Proposed Rulemaking the U.S. Secretary of Energy initiated in October 2025. That proceeding targets how loads larger than 20 MW — chiefly data centers — connect to the interstate transmission system.
Chairman Laura V. Swett said staff reviewed more than 3,500 pages of comments and coordinated across federal agencies before settling on a path forward.
What it means for operators and compliance teams
This docket is the framework the co-location and large-load fights have been pointing toward. FERC has already moved piecemeal — the December 2025 PJM co-location order and the January 2026 approval of SPP's High Impact Large Load (HILL) initiative — but RM26-4 is where the national rules of the road get set.
If FERC advances a rule today, expect downstream pressure on interconnection studies, cost allocation, and load-ramp modeling. Reliability coordinators and transmission planners should be folding large-load assumptions into TPL studies and seasonal assessments now — not treating them as edge cases.
