FERC's Large-Load Interconnection Rule Comes Due This Month
FERC has said it will act by June 2026 on its rulemaking governing how large loads connect to the interstate transmission system. That window is now open.
The proceeding traces back to an Advance Notice of Proposed Rulemaking the Commission opened in October 2025, at the direction of the Secretary of Energy. It targets loads larger than 20 MW — the data centers and industrial users reshaping demand across every region.
One reform on the table: letting flexible loads that agree to curtail move through interconnection studies faster, with some studies completed in as little as 60 days. The Commission has already moved on related ground, directing PJM in December 2025 to adopt transparent rules for loads co-located with generation.
