Product details

Generator reliability is won or lost in the quality of the plant’s operating facts, limits, and communication.

Generator Operator (GOP) Operations Fundamentals develops the judgment required to connect unit behavior with grid reliability. Learners work through plant capability, frequency response, voltage support, abnormal conditions, restoration, protection, and disciplined coordination with the BA, TOP, and RC.

What learners will be able to do

  • Explain the GOP function and its boundary with BA, TOP, RC, GO, and plant responsibilities.
  • Report MW capability, ramp limits, control mode, limiting conditions, timing, and reactive impacts clearly.
  • Interpret governor response, headroom, deadband, runbacks, and unit behavior during frequency events.
  • Manage voltage-support communication around AVR status, Mvar capability, limiters, and capability-curve tradeoffs.
  • Respond conservatively to trips, runbacks, emergencies, blackstart instructions, and restoration hold points.
  • Preserve operating evidence without turning observations into unsupported root-cause or cyber conclusions.

What is included

  • 8 structured modules and 42 learner-visible lessons.
  • 7 closed-note module checks plus a 50-question final assessment.
  • 85 scored questions with post-submission rationales and remediation guidance.
  • 3 practice-lab scenario sets covering generator limitations, communication, and restoration decisions.
  • Responsive operating tables, original diagrams, worked examples, and an EPG Solutions completion certificate.

Course map

  1. GOP role and reliability orientation.
  2. Communication with the TOP, BA, and RC.
  3. Frequency response and unit behavior.
  4. Voltage and reactive support.
  5. Unit trips, runbacks, and emergency conditions.
  6. Blackstart and restoration interface.
  7. Protection and CIP awareness.
  8. GOP practice lab and final assessment.

Who should take it

Generator operators, plant control-room trainees, generation dispatch personnel, supervisors building a shared operating language, and transmission, balancing, reliability, engineering, or compliance staff who need stronger generation-side fluency.
